To Suds or Not to Suds

Why You Should Rethink Using Shampoo!

First off let me start by saying that this post is no means saying that you should not wash you hair. The entire point of this post is to talk about whether or not you should be washing your hair with actual shampoo.

When making the switch over to organic or natural products many people still hold onto shampoo. This is for different reasons. Some people just love the way soap feels on their hair. Some people love the bubbles. Others feel that it is necessary for them to actually get in there and wash their hair with soap.

To decide whether or not you should wash with shampoo you should first and foremost analyze how oily your scalp is. I have an oily scalp but my hair is kinky and frizzy making it difficult for sebum to travel down the shaft and moisturize my ends. So what I find is that my ends become very dry. Perhaps you have experienced this as well. As a way to combat this I started conditioner washing most washes and only shampooing when I am in need of a clarifier.

If your hair AND scalp is oily you may want to try and explore other methods of washing. Like using diluted apple cider vinegar. It is less harmful to your hair than shampoo. Some people cleanse with baking soda as well. A great rule of thumb is to remember that you don't need to shampoo your hair every time you wash your hair.

If your hair isn't greasy or over-encumbered with product build up there is really no reason for you to shampoo your hair anyway. There are methods to washing your hair with conditioner that will get your hair and scalp clean without stripping it of its natural oils.

If you are finding that you have to shampoo very often make sure you are not using products and treatments that leave buildup on your hair. If you have fine or wavy-straight hair you should only apply oil to the ends of your hair to avoid clogging your scalps pores. When the scalp is clogged with oil and dirt your hair will not grow as much as it potentially can. Conversely, if you shampoo too much your hair will lose out on the much needed sebum it needs to stay healthy and thrive.

Next Post I'll teach you about the importance of oiling ALL hair types.
